Southern RNA Secures Major Grant to Expand LNP-mRNA Manufacturing

Brisbane, QLD – Southern RNA is proud to announce that it has been awarded funding through the South-East Queensland Innovation Economy Fund (SEQIEF), as part of a landmark investment by the Australian and Queensland governments to accelerate innovation and create high-value, knowledge-intensive jobs across the region.
The announcement made official by Senator the Hon. Jenny McAllister, Australia’s Minister for Cities, and The Hon Andrew Powell MP, Queensland Minister for the Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation, highlights the government’s commitment to driving industry-led growth through innovation infrastructure. Southern RNA’s project will establish a GMP-compliant Lipid Nanoparticle (LNP)-mRNA formulation platform at its Eight Mile Plains facility, bridging a critical gap in Australia’s biomanufacturing ecosystem.
“This funding represents a major milestone for Southern RNA and Queensland’s biotechnology sector,” said Dr. Romain Tropée, head of Science and Technology at Southern RNA. “It will enable us to deliver world-class LNP-mRNA manufacturing capabilities that support clinical development of innovative RNA-based therapies, including cancer vaccines and next-generation medicines.”
The project will deliver new infrastructure, create 10 high-skilled jobs, and enhance collaboration across the region’s innovation precincts, including strong partnerships with Griffith University, Vaxxas and University of Queensland, and industry leaders such as Providence Therapeutics.
Southern RNA’s successful proposal was built around a vision to support the development and commercialisation of personalised RNA medicines, provide end-to-end manufacturing services, and grow Queensland’s sovereign capacity in advanced biomanufacturing.
The company looks forward to working with stakeholders across industry, academia, and government to deliver this nationally significant project and contribute to the long-term growth of Queensland’s innovation economy.
